On a rainy night in Busan, So-young (Lee ‘IU’ Ji-eun) leaves her baby Woo-sung outside a ‘baby box’, a safe place set up in Korean churches for new mothers to leave unwanted infants. Instead, he’s picked up by Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) who runs an unofficial adoption brokerage & plans to find him a new home. So-young tracks down both Sang-hyun & his business partner Dong-soo (Gang Dong-won) & decides to join their pursuit alongside a seven-year-old stowaway from a nearby orphanage, but as they search for Woo-sung’s new family, the unlikely group evolves into something of a family themselves – unaware they’re being tailed by two detectives (Doona Bae & Lee Joo-young) who are determined to stop them. Heartwarming, funny and moving, Broker is the outstanding new film from Hirokazu Kore-eda, the acclaimed director of Shoplifters.

Thanks to our friends, Picturehouse Entertainment, we hosted a very special free preview for our MilkTea audiences at the Picturehouse Central on the 21 February at 18:00.

Broker

As part of our celebration of Broker coming to the big screen, we commissioned a bespoke piece of art that celebrates the film on the subject of family, the ones we make along our journey of life. Creating this art is Jasmine Gardner, Manchester-based multi-disciplinary artist whose work primarily explores her lived experience of being born in Suzhou in China & adopted into a white family - she has lived in the UK since the age of 7 months old. Her artistic practice references traditional Chinese craft & aesthetics to confront contemporary issues such as racism, sexism & xenophobic hate toward the ESEA community within the UK as well as duality between both her Chinese & English cultural identity.

As part of this event, we collaborated with Steamroom - a ESEA founded & helmed business in East London. Founded in 2004, the husband-&-wife duo, Tony & Fran, have been commandeering the Steamroom which initially started its life as a Chinese takeaway in the 70’s managed by Tony’s father. Today the Steamroom is a premier dry cleaning store known for their bespoke services & specialist garment knowledge but also for their distinctive brand & eccentric boutique. More than that, they have become steadfast supporters of ESEA artist community & as part of our community engagement, we want to uplift this ESEA family business & share the great work they do with our MilkTea community - as part of the screening you will find a small but perfectly formed exhibition sharing the art from within the walls of the Steamroom.
